An ultralight MacBook this fall and an iMac with its own GPU in 2021: more data from the transition to Apple Silicon
Asian media once again star in Apple rumors in the week that marks the end of the holidays. According to the China Times , and reflected by MacRumors , Apple plans to launch a new MacBook that breaks all weight schemes in laptops : it would weigh less than 1 kg, have a 12-inch screen and have the A14X chip.
Said MacBook will be launched, always according to the source, before the end of this year. It would be one of the first Macs with an Apple Silicon chip to be launched, and one of its key factors would be a battery life of 15 to 20 hours thanks to the energy efficiency of the chip. It would have a single USB port.
An iMac with its own special GPU in 2021
Another computer from which data have been obtained is the iMac with an Apple Silicon chip : a version of this desktop with a GPU totally created by Apple would arrive during the second half of 2021. This CPU is internally identified as the Lifuka project , and would be based on the 5nm architecture provided by TSMC.
It is not clear if this iMac model will be the first to be presented with an Apple Silicon chip, but if so, we would be talking about a wait of at least one year. Another possibility is that, before that, Apple will launch a more basic iMac model and without this GPU oriented more towards the general user and hobbyist than the professionals.
I was just thinking about this a few weeks ago: we have a 21.5 iMac that has hardly received any news in the latest update, indicating that it may be the first to be replaced in the era of Apple Silicon. Maybe this iMac will be the one to launch sooner with decent graphics power and then next year make way for the big-screen iMac and this much more powerful Lifuka GPU ? At the moment we can only assess it as a hypothesis.
