Xperia 5 II: Sony introduces cheaper brother of the Xperia 1 II




Sony is expanding its smartphone portfolio with a new Xperia model. The Xperia 5 II (pronounced five mark two) that comes with the world's first 4K HDR slow motion video function with up to 120 frames per second in a smartphone. The 5G cell phone is in the premium segment and will cost 899 euros from market launch. It's a slightly stripped-down version of the premium flagship Xperia 1 II.

Xperia 5 II: focus is on gaming

Sony puts the focus on mobile gaming with the Xperia 5 II and comes with the game optimizer of the Xperia 1 II. The Heat Suppression Power Control is designed to prevent overheating. If you gamble with the power cable plugged in, you are also safe, according to Sony: The power from the charging cable is then not supplied to the battery when playing, but directly to the corresponding hardware, which is supposed to relieve the battery. The camera equipment can also be seen on paper. Sony has installed a triple camera in the new Xperia 5 II with 16 mm super wide angle, 24 mm wide angle and 70 mm telephoto as well as 12 megapixel resolution each. Sony also makes use of the expertise of the camera division and brings a continuous autofocus with 60 fps real-time tracking8 (and real-time eye autofocus for humans and animals) from the camera technology of the Alpha series to the Xperia 5 II. In addition, the Xperia 5 II comes with a dedicated Google Assistant button - it remains to be seen whether users can assign other functions to these afterwards. The Snapdragon 865 is 5G-capable and has access to 8 GB of RAM. Sony enters 128 GB as internal memory for data - expansion via microSD is possible (capacity still unknown). 


The exact date for the market launch is still pending. Sony says that the Xperia 5 II should be available from the fourth quarter of 2020 with Android 10 in black, gray and blue for 899 euros (RRP). The Xperia 1 II came onto the market just a few months ago at a price of 1,200 euros and also offers a ToF sensor in the camera setup, 256 GB of memory and comes with a 4K OLED display.
