Galaxy Tab S7: Samsung picks up Apple again

Galaxy Tab S7: Samsung picks up Apple again

After Apple allowed a close cooperation with the in-house iPad with Sidecar in macOS, Samsung is now also working on a similar solution.

At first glance, the idea behind Apple's Sidecar is extremely simple: Mac users can use an existing tablet as a second display under macOS . In combination with the Apple Pencil, the iPad also turns into a graphics tablet.

As Android Police claims to have found out from their sources, Samsung is working on a comparable feature, which is currently to be referred to internally as "Sidekick". According to the report, the feature could appear for owners of the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7 + later this year.

Galaxy Tab S7 and S7 + as an extended display for Windows PCs

While Apple is limited to macOS and iPadOS, Samsung is working on the integration in Windows. As with Sidecar, Samsung's tablets should then serve as an extended display for the Windows PC, for example.

Samsung's Sidekick should also allow input using the S Pen. According to the sources, this supports the detection of the pressure of the pen and should work just like a conventional active pen under Windows. This could also transform the Android tablet into a graphics tablet, which can be used on the PC, for example, in conjunction with professional apps such as Adobe Illustrator.

Unfortunately, it is not yet known how the connection between the PC and the Galaxy Tab will be established. However, it stands to reason that Samsung will offer users either the connection via USB-C or Wi-Fi to choose from.

On the Mac, Sidecar is a helpful extension if you already have an iPad and need a little more space on the macOS desktop. The combination of PC and Galaxy Tab S7 could also prove to be a useful feature for Windows users.

It is still unclear when exactly the feature currently known as Sidekick will appear. So far there is only talk that it could possibly be presented until the end of 2020. The report also only mentions the Galaxy Tab S7 and S7 +, so owners of older Samsung tablets may have to do without the function.
